Common Serial Number Mistakes

O vs. Zero

The letter O and the number 0 look almost identical on most labels. If decoding fails, try swapping them. Most brands use the number zero in date codes, not the letter O.

I vs. One

Same problem with the capital letter I and the number 1. When in doubt, try the number 1 first.

Model vs. Serial

The model number is different from the serial number. The serial is usually shorter and may start with letters. Look for a label that says "S/N" or "Serial."

Extra Characters

Some labels include prefixes like "S/N:" or dashes between groups. Strip those out and enter only the core serial characters.

What Serial Numbers Look Like by Brand

Whirlpool
9 characters, starts with a letter for year (e.g., VS40000000). First letter = year code, second = month.
GE
Two letters followed by six digits. First letter = month, second = year (e.g., JL123456).
Samsung
10–14 characters. Year and month often in positions 3–4 (e.g., 06JM20S1B00001).
LG
10–12 characters. First two digits often indicate year (e.g., 801KRF00000).
Maytag
Similar to Whirlpool (same parent company). Letter-digit format (e.g., CY123456).

When This Decoder Saves the Day

Buying a Used Appliance

A seller claims the refrigerator is "about 5 years old." You decode the serial and find it's actually 14 years old, well past the average lifespan. That information changes the price you're willing to pay, or whether you want it at all.

Home Inspection Prep

Your home is going on the market. You decode every appliance serial so you can give buyers accurate ages. Transparency builds trust and can speed up the sale.

Repair or Replace?

Your dryer needs a $200 repair. The decoder shows it's 13 years old with an average lifespan of 14. You decide to put that money toward a new unit instead of repairing one that's near the end.
